A love letter, not a mission statement.
To everyone who has ever loved something more than money could measure —
We lost Zojja first — our German Shepherd girl, all gentleness and thunder — on August 20, 2025. Eight months later, on April 9, 2026, I carried Yaroo into an emergency clinic for the last time. Before anyone could see him, the desk asked for $2,000. Then $5,000 more. I could pay — and I would have given anything. He didn’t make it either.
Losing them both in one year taught me what grief is. But sitting in that waiting room, I watched other families face something crueler: a kind of math no one should ever do — what they had, against what they loved.
I have spent twenty years in philanthropy, the last ten with Akhuwat — the world’s largest interest-free microfinance organization, which has placed $1.8 billion in zero-interest loans into four million families’ hands — where I serve as Global President Volunteer. I knew what a few hundred dollars, lent with dignity, can do. That night I decided America needed the same bridge.
So VIGA is my love letter — to Yaroo and Zojja, and to this country that became my home. It works the way love works: it goes out, it comes back, and it goes out again. Your repaid dollar waits quietly for the next family standing at the same door you once stood at.
